Our Western diet and lifestyle is creating numerous health problems, not only with our bodies, but also our minds... Alzheimer's is now being dubbed 'Diabetes Type 3' and we are witnessing a distinct increase in auto-immune disease, which it is believed is largely attributable to our consumption of ultra-processed foods (or UPFs for short).
But here's the thing, we can actively take steps to prevent many of these diseases. We all age yes, getting older is inevitable (and a privilege!) but accelerated ageing is not. The prevention and management of chronic disease through lifestyle changes is of particular interest and focus to me and with the pandemic, it has never been more important to strengthen your immune health through diet and lifestyle changes.
I’ve always believed in a holistic approach to life. The importance of practicing yoga, getting outdoors, eating whole foods and avoiding toxins in toiletries and household products. This, coupled with goal setting, learning something new and tapping into our creative side, are the foundations of what health coaching is all about.
For me, my journey began way back in my early 20s when it was announced that CJD had crossed the food chain. So began my belief that we really are what we eat and I've subsequently helped friends and family manage various health issues through dietary and lifestyle changes alone.
Then in my 40s I developed excruciating hip pain and chronic fatigue in my leg muscles, leaving me barely able to step up a curb, let alone go for a stroll outdoors. After numerous tests and x-rays came back 'clear' and my GP declared nothing was wrong with me I decided it was time to take 'getting older' into my own hands. I wasn't prepared to accept my symptoms had anything to do with ageing at all, and they weren't! After a quick trip to a physio it was confirmed that the cause of my hip pain and muscle fatigue was down to hip hyper-mobility. Something I'd never even realised I had, just thought I was naturally so flexible in my yoga class!
The only way out of the pain I was in and to not spend the rest of my life grimacing and declaring 'it's down to age' with a wave of my hand was to get active and to keep my core strong so that I stay 'glued' together. Not exercising for even a limited period of time is no longer an option for me unless I want the pain and muscle fatigue to return.
Within a year of my hip hyper-mobility 'diagnosis' I was completely pain free and had completed the London Moonwalk, climbed to the summit of Gran Paradiso and spent Christmas Day at Everest Basecamp after a 10 day hike!
Now in my 50s I can quite honestly say I have never felt fitter, stronger or healthier. I practice yoga every morning to start my day, do a daily 5k walk (weather permitting, this is Snowdonia after all!) and every weekend I'll head out into the mountains for a very long all day walk, with the odd bit of cycling and climbing thrown in. I also ensure I completely support the demands I place on my body by providing it with the nutrition it deserves. Ageing well is now my focus!
Having spent the last 30 years obsessing over what I eat and how the body can heal itself if given the right help, I decided it was finally time to formalise things so that I could apply my knowledge and experience in helping others. With the pandemic came an extra 10 hours a week I no longer had to spend commuting, so I dedicated that time to qualifying with CNM (College of Naturopathic Medicine) as a Health Coach, where I am also continuing my studies into Naturopathic Nutrition.
